Bad-language filter
out of sight, one click away

List the words you would rather not read, or switch on a default list. Mail carrying one opens behind a warning, and nothing is deleted.

In short

What is an email profanity filter?

A profanity filter checks text against a list of words and acts when one turns up. The hard part is matching: a filter that wants exact spellings lets f#ck through, and one that looks inside words silences Scunthorpe.

to show a held message anyway

blocked words the warning quotes or counts

How it works

Spacing and symbols do not slip past

Case, spacing and stretched letters are ignored, and the usual stand-ins, like 1 for i, count as letters. With idiot on your list, 1d10t, i.d.i.o.t and IDIOOOT are held too.

Whole words only, never inside one

A list holding ass leaves a message about a class alone, and the default list lets Scunthorpe through.

Checked as you read, not on arrival

Add a word today and the message that made you add it is held the next time you open it.

What you get

In the product today

Held, not deleted

It stays where it is, behind a warning, until “Show it anyway” opens it.

Never quotes the word

The warning names no word and gives no count.

Your words and ours

Your own list, plus a default one, under Privacy in your workspace settings.

Per domain or address

A domain, or one address, can keep a word list of its own.

Good practice

Getting the most out of it

  1. 01

    List every form

Only whole words match, so idiot does not hold idiots. Add each form you mean.

  2. 02

    Paste the lot

Commas, spaces and new lines all separate entries, so a whole list pastes at once.

  3. 03

    Start from the default

Switch the default list on first, then add only the words it misses.
